For the sauce: cook onion in the butter till tender. Stir in flour, 1/2 tsp salt and a little pepper. Add milk all at once. Cook and stir till thickened and bubbly. Remove from heat.

Place 1/2 the sliced potatoes in a greased 1 qt casserole dish. Cover with 1/2 of the ham and half of the white sauce. Repeat layers.

Bake covered in a 350° oven for 45 min. Uncover and bake another 30-35 min or until potatoes are tender. Let stand 5 min.
