Mix together cocoa, food coloring, and water and set aside.

Cream together shortening and sugar, add in eggs and cocoa paste and beat for at least 15 minutes.

Add flour and salt alternately with buttermilk. Then add vanilla, mix your vinegar and baking soda and add, and stir into batter until combined.

Pour batter into prepared round pans and bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean and cake is set in middle.

Cool completely before frosting with cream cheese frosting.
