Step
1
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
2
In a large mixing bowl, combine 1/2 cups flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and baking soda; mix well.
3
In a saucepan, heat buttermilk, water, and shortening until warm (about 120-130 degrees; shortening does not need to melt).
4
Add to flour mixture and blend at low speed until moistened; then beat 3 minutes at medium speed.
5
By hand, gradually stir in remaining flour to make a firm dough. Knead on a floured surface until smooth and elastic; at least 5 minutes.
6
Place in a greased bowl, turning to grease the top of the dough as well. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 20 minutes.
7
Punch down the dough and divide into 24 pieces. Form the dough into balls and place on greased cookie sheet or 15X10 inch pan.
8
Cover and let rise in warm place until almost doubled in size, about 20 minutes.
9
Bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. remove from pan; brush with butter, and cool on racks.
