Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Put stick of butter in 9x13 pan and melt in oven while you prepare batter.

In large bowl combine buttermilk, eggs, sugar and salt. Mix well.

In small bowl combine cornmeal, flour and baking soda. Mix well.

Remove melted butter from oven and add all but 1 tablespoon to the buttermilk mixture, leaving the remaining 1 tablespoon in the pan. Mix well.

Add the cornmeal mixture to the buttermilk mixture and stir until all ingredients are well mixed. Batter will be lumpy.

Bake at 400 degrees for 25 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cut into 12 slices and serve hot or cold.
