Combine flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and cream of tartar . Cut in lard to form a crumbly mixture. Add baking soda to buttermilk and stir well. Do not add baking soda to dry mixture only to the butter milk. Stir into dry mixture. Knead moistened dough about 10 times on floured surface. Roll out dough to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut into rounds with a glass. Bake at 425 degrees for 11 minutes on un greased pan, Do not crowd.
