Pour oil to depth of 2 inches into a high sided pan; heat to 375°. Re-hydrate onion in 6 tablespoons hot water, drain. Combine dry ingredients. Add egg, oil, onions and milk; stir just until moistened. Let stand 10 minutes.

Drop batter by rounded teaspoonfuls into hot oil, and fry, in batches, 2 minutes on each side or until golden. Keep warm in a 200° oven.
