Mix flour, 2 T sugar, baking powder and salt together.

Cut in shortening.

Mix milk in, lightly kneed dough. Cut dough in half and pat half of it into the 8 inch square pan. Dot with butter. Place other half of dough in on top of that. Bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes, less in a hot oven.

Wash strawberries and cut into chunks then stir with 1 cup sugar. Let set out for half an hour, stirring occasionally. Strawberries should be stirred until sugar is dissolved nearly completely before serving.

Whip cream according to package directions. Serve warm squares of shortbread with generous scoops of strawberries and whipped topping. For more absorbent shortcake cut the shortbread in half prior to topping it.
