Place half of the sugar in bowl and add water. Shake in yeast, stir gently. Set aside in warm place to rise until full and bubbly.
2
Mix remaining sugar, salt, and one cup of flour. Add yeast when ready, then egg. Stir and add remaining flour to make dough ready to handle for kneading (when not very sticky... may have to add more flour).
3
Knead for about 5 to 10 minutes. Set in large enough bowl in a warm place and cover. Let rise until doubled (depending on how warm the house is, about an hour).
4
Punch down and knead again briefly. Shape into loaf and place in greased pan. Let rise again, and bake at 350 for about 20 minutes (check after 15 minutes). Rolls can be made after first rising. Let rise until double and bake.
