Mix sugar into softened butter, then add flour 1 cup at a time. Mix well. Batter is very stiff, and a pastry knife is a good choice for mixing.
Press into an 11 x 15" baking pan, then score the top with a fork to make a crosshatch pattern.
Bake for 40-45 minutes at 300. It should be very lightly browned and not puffed up in the center. Easy to overcook.
