Use a small saucepan and cook onion and green or sweet red pepper (choose one or the other pepper) in margarine until very tender.

Stir in fresh snipped basil or half teaspoon dried basil, crushed.

Cook and stir for one minute more.

Remove from heat.

Combine in blender container cooked vegetable mixture, tomato juice and buttermilk.

Cover and blend until smooth.

If serving cold, chill thoroughly.

Garnish each serving with fresh basil leaves or lime slices, if desired.
