Steps
Sequence Step
1Soften yeast in 1 cup lukewarm water with 1 tsp sugar.
2Scald the milk, then stir in salt and sugar. Cool to lukewarm.
3When milk is cooled, stir in the yeast mixture. Combine with beaten eggs.
4Fold in about 4 cups of flour and beat until smooth. Add cooled melted shortening and beat smooth.
5Stir and knead in enough flour to make a smooth, elastic, but not too stiff dough.
6Place dough in a lightly greased bowl. Cover, and let rise about 1 hour until doubled.
7Place on a lightly floured board and shape into 3 loaves. Place loaves in greased pans and let rise again until double.
8Bake 20 minutes at 400, and then reduce heat to 350 and bake 12 minutes longer.
