Steps
Sequence Step
1Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
2In a large mixing bowl, combine 1/2 cups flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and baking soda; mix well.
3In a saucepan, heat buttermilk, water, and shortening until warm (about 120-130 degrees; shortening does not need to melt).
4Add to flour mixture and blend at low speed until moistened; then beat 3 minutes at medium speed.
5By hand, gradually stir in remaining flour to make a firm dough. Knead on a floured surface until smooth and elastic; at least 5 minutes.
6Place in a greased bowl, turning to grease the top of the dough as well. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 20 minutes.
7Punch down the dough and divide into 24 pieces. Form the dough into balls and place on greased cookie sheet or 15X10 inch pan.
8Cover and let rise in warm place until almost doubled in size, about 20 minutes.
9Bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. remove from pan; brush with butter, and cool on racks.
