Sequence Step
1Preheat oven to 400 degrees. grease two small baking dishes with butter. Place berries, 1T sugar, 2t flour and lemon juice in a bowl and mix to combine. Spoon half into each dish.
2To make the topping place the rest of the sugar, flour, cornmeal, baking powder, baking soda, pinch salt into a small bowl. Whisk to blend well. Add butter pieces and toss to coat the butter with the flour mixture. Cut the butter into the flour mixture with a pastry blender until it remembers coarse meal. Sprinkle the buttermilk over the flour mixture and toss briefly with a fork until moist clumps form. Do not overmix. Spoon the topping evenly over the filling.
3Bake until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly, 15-20 minutes. Remove dishes from oven and let them cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature, with your choice of ice cream or topping.
