Steps
Sequence Step
Mix flour and salt in a medium bowl. Cut in shortening using a pastry mixer or butter knife. In a separate bowl whisk egg yolk and the milk together. Once shortening is mix and the dough has begun to clump add the egg yolk mix to the flour.
When the flour is mixed move to a lightly floured surface. Using either a rolling pin or your hands, roll flour out until its thin (less than a quarter inch). Then cut dough into 4x4 inch squares. You should get about 12.
Set dough squares aside in a cool place (or refrigerate). Core, slice, peel and cube apples. Place in a medium bowl. Add the chopped walnuts, cinnamon, and brown sugar to the bowl, stir ingredients. Set the bowl aside.
Preheat oven to 350. Lightly spray a 9x13 inch pan with cooking spray.
In a small saucepan add white sugar and water. Place on burner on medium-high heat. Stir occasionally until sugar dissolves. Allow sugar mixture to boil for about 5 minutes (be careful not to cook to long because the sauce will thicken to much when cooked with dumplings).
Get dough squares. Spoon apple mixture on to the dough square. Pull up opposite ends and pinch all ends together. Then pinch the seams of the dough closed. Place dumpling into 9x 13 inch pan. Repeat until all dumplings are done.
Take the sauce from the sauces pan and spoon it over the dumplings. Save about a quarter of the sauce to use during cooking.
Bake dumplings in preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until the dumplings are light brown. Every 10 mins or so spoon sauce over dumplings either from saucepan or cooking pan. Make sure to remove from 9x13 before sauce cools and makes dumplings sticky. Best served warm.
