| 1 | Mix all dry ingredients together, including yeast (yeast should be instant). | 2 | Mix all wet ingredients together | 3 | Mix Dry and Wet ingredients, dough should be stiffer than normal bread dough. If bread is too stiff or you cannot incorporate all dry ingredients, add small amounts of warm water. | 4 | Once all ingredients are mixed together, knead dough for 10 minutes or until smooth. | 5 | After finished kneading, cut dough into 8 pieces of equal size, set aside. (to prevent the dough from becoming dry, you can place a damp washcloth on top). Let the dough rest for 20 minutes. | 6 | Begin to shape dough. Roll dough out into cylinders approximately 1 ½ inches thick. Then wrap dough into a circle and press ends together – you can use a very small amount of warm water to help with this.
Don’t worry if your bagels are not perfectly shaped, this comes with practices. Once your bagels have their shape, set aside and let rest for 20 minutes. | 7 | While dough is resting, heat oven to 425 degrees and bring a large pot of water to boil. Grease a cookie sheet. (Note, instead of oil you can dust the cookie sheet with cornmeal to coat the bottom of the bagels if desired). | 8 | Once dough has finished resting and water is boiling, drop bagels into boiling water, ensure that they are not touching. Boil on one side about 1 ½ minutes, then turn and boil on other side for 1 ½ minutes (dough will puff up slightly). Remove from water and set aside on a different plate or tray to dry for 1 minute, then move to greased cookie sheet. | 9 | Optional: Top bagels with desired topping, Poppy seeds, Sesame seeds, ect. | 10 | Place bagels in oven. Cook for 10 minutes, then take out of oven and turn bagels over. Cook for an additional 10 minutes or until golden brown. |
